Solstice Cerveza Crema:
Cerveza Crema, from Anderson Valley Brewing Co., Boonville, CA, is our choice for best summer beer. The name may be a reference to the cream ale style, or a nod to the popularity of Mexican beers as summer refreshers.
While an ale might not be the first choice for a summer thirst quencher, this one fits the bill. It’s a malty copper-colored brew with a touch of some unspecified spice (vanilla extract, perhaps?). There is some vanilla in the nose, for sure, along with some toffee aromas. Body is light, and it comes in at 5.6% alcohol by volume. Given the light body, Cerveza Crema has an unusually complex malt character. Very creamy, with layers of sweet malt flavor, like a caramel cookie. It’s a little on the sweet side, but not cloying and very drinkable.
The brewer calls Cerveza Crema a session beer, and the label almost fits, although it has more going on than most session beers.
